Ca Mau is one of the destinations with the most beautiful and diverse landscapes in Vietnam — from the deep green mangrove forest to mudflats opening out to the ocean, from canoes zooming through canals to golden melaleuca forests. But to get truly impressive photos or vlog clips, you need to know these tips from Mr. Bi — who has guided hundreds of tour groups and witnessed countless most beautiful moments in this land.
1. Golden Hour for Photography in Ca Mau
Lighting is the most important factor determining photo quality. At Cape Ca Mau, the golden hour happens twice a day:
Morning Golden Hour (6 AM - 8 AM)
The sunlight is soft, warm yellow, casting long shadows towards the West. At the GPS 0001 coordinate landmark, morning light shining from the East creates incredibly magical sun rays piercing through the mangrove canopy. This is also when the sea reflects the sky most beautifully.
Afternoon Golden Hour (3:30 PM - 5:30 PM)
Sunset is particularly stunning at Cape Ca Mau because you can witness the sun setting into the West Sea. The brilliant red-orange color reflecting on the water surface — a sight not found anywhere else in Vietnam.
Absolutely avoid shooting from 10 AM to 2 PM
The Southern midday sun is harsh and vertical, creating heavy dark shadows under people's noses/eyes, and photos get "blown out" losing detail. If you must shoot during this time, use a white reflector to fill in light from below.
2. Top 5 Must-Visit Photo Spots
GPS 0001 Coordinate Landmark — Symbol of Pride
This is a "must-have" photo for every visitor coming to Cape Ca Mau. The best angle: stand in the middle of the bridge, looking towards the landmark with the blue sea in the background. Use a wide lens 16-24mm (or phone's ultrawide). Avoid looking directly at the sun; let the sun be 45 degrees to the side.
Walking Bridge Through Mangrove Forest
The wooden bridge is about 1.2km long going through the mangrove forest — this is a "fairy path" for portrait photos. Stand in the middle of the bridge, look forward with two rows of mangroves on both sides creating a highly impressive perspective leading line. Shoot in the morning with light filtering through the leaves.
On a Canoe Through Forest Canals
Sit at the front or middle of the canoe, looking back — this is the best vlog angle when the canoe is running through a narrow canal, flanked by mangroves reflecting in the water. Use a GoPro attached to the canoe's bow or handhold it high to get a wide angle.
Mudflats During Low Tide
When the tide recedes (usually 9-11 AM or 3-5 PM), the exposed mudflat reflects the sky like a mirror — a surreal scene. You need to wear boots or accept wading in mud up to your knees. A flat lay photo on the mudflat with the reflected sky is a very artistic "masterpiece."
Ba Ba Shirt & Conical Hat — Check-in Outfits
Wearing a ba ba shirt (homestay lends for free) + conical hat, taking photos at any corner of Cape Ca Mau is beautiful. Traditional Southern clothing gives photos cultural depth, vastly different from normal travel photos. This is why 90% of Mr. Bi's customers wear a ba ba shirt when taking photos.
3. Outfits to Wear
Outfits greatly affect photo quality, especially with the characteristic green tone of Ca Mau's mangrove forest:
Colors matching Ca Mau scenery:
- White — stands out against the green forest background, bright and fresh
- Yellow/Orange — warm, beautiful at sunset
- Light Blue — naturally blends with the sky
- Traditional Ba Ba shirt — the most beautiful, homestay lends for free
Should avoid:
- All black — easily gets overexposed against bright backgrounds
- Messy patterns, complex stripes — overpowers the landscape
- High heels or thin sandals — unsuitable for the terrain
- Shorts if going into the forest — mosquitoes and thorns will make you regret it
4. Equipment to Bring
5. Vlog Tips on a Canoe
The canoe is the most distinctive mode of transport in Cape Ca Mau, but also the biggest challenge for vloggers:
- ✅Use an image stabilizing gimbal (DJI OM6 or similar) to compensate for shake when the canoe hits waves
- ✅Sit at the canoe bow for the widest angle, or in the middle of the boat to shoot 360 degrees
- ✅Shoot slow motion (120fps or 240fps) while the canoe runs through the forest to create a cinematic effect
- ✅Communicate with the guide to know when beautiful scenery is coming up, prepare the camera beforehand
- ⚠️Do not hold a DSLR/mirrorless camera out when the canoe is running fast — it's very easy to drop
6. Flycam — Can You Film?
This is the question most YouTubers and content creators ask when joining the Cape Ca Mau tour. The answer is: you can fly a drone in some areas, but must ask for permission beforehand.
Drone flying permission process:
- 1. Contact the Management Board of Cape Ca Mau National Park at least 3-5 working days before arriving
- 2. Provide information: full name, ID, type of drone, purpose of flight, expected time
- 3. Allowed flying areas are usually outside the core zone of the National Park
- 4. Absolutely do not fly in restricted zones — violations can result in heavy fines and equipment confiscation
- 5. Mr. Bi can help contact in advance for guests in need — message via Zalo 0919 244 834
7. Post-Processing Tips — Color Grading Ca Mau Photos
Ca Mau has characteristic tones of the jade green of the mangrove forest, warm yellow of the sun, and earthy brown of the mudflats. When color grading, keep the soul of this land intact:
Forest green tone preset:
- Temp: Slightly decrease (-5 to -10) for cooler green
- Tint: Slightly increase (+3 to +7) for leaf green
- Green HSL: Increase Saturation +15, decrease Luminance -10
- Light Vignette (-15) to create depth for the photo
Golden hour filter:
- Temp: Increase (+15 to +25) for warm sunset
- Highlights: Decrease (-30) to keep bright sky details
- Shadows: Increase (+20) to open dark area details
- Orange/Yellow HSL: Increase Saturation +20 for better skin tones
Frequently Asked Questions
What equipment is needed to vlog Ca Mau?
Minimum needed: good camera phone (iPhone/Android from 2022), power bank, waterproof bag. A 20,000mAh power bank is mandatory because all-day tours don't have electricity to charge.
Can I use a drone on the Ba Ngoai Homestay tour?
Areas outside the core zone of the National Park can be flown but require permission 3-5 working days in advance. Mr. Bi can assist in contacting for licensing procedures for guests who want to film with a flycam. Flying is strictly prohibited in the core zone of Cape Ca Mau National Park.
Where are the best photo spots in Ca Mau?
Top 5: (1) GPS 0001 coordinate landmark at dawn 5:30-6 AM; (2) Bridge through mangrove forest in the morning; (3) Dat Mui mudflat when tide recedes; (4) U Minh Ha melaleuca forest canals; (5) Song Doc fish market at 4-5 AM. Each spot has its own prime time — ask your guide to make the best use of it.
