Experience the Nghinh Ông (Whale) Festival in Song Doc, Ca Mau 2026
The Nghinh Ông (Whale) Festival in Song Doc (held from the 14th to the 16th of the second lunar month annually in Tran Van Thoi District, Ca Mau Province) is the largest folk festival praying for good fishing in Ca Mau province. This is an occasion when thousands of offshore fishing boats gather at the estuary for a colorful parade to thank the Nam Hai deity (the whale) and pray for favorable weather and calm seas.
1. Spiritual and Cultural Significance of the Nghinh Ông Festival
For the coastal fishermen of Song Doc, the Whale (Cá Ông) is a sacred guardian deity always willing to help boats overcome huge waves and strong winds. The Nghinh Ông Festival has been preserved through many generations as a sacred symbol showing the philosophy of remembering the source of the water we drink and the spirit of solidarity in the coastal region.
2. Exciting Activities at the Festival
- Whale palanquin procession to the sea: Dozens of palanquin procession boats are brightly decorated with flags and flowers, with the lively sound of lion dance drums riding the waves to the estuary to cast lots and welcome the Whale.
- Folk games & night market: Three-plank boat racing, tug of war, clay pot breaking, traditional amateur music (đờn ca tài tử) exchanges, and a very bustling fresh seafood market.
