Self-Driving Road Trip to Ca Mau by Car & Motorbike from Saigon/Can Tho

Updated 01/07/2026  |  9 min read

Driving yourself, crossing the straight roads lined with water coconuts of the Mekong Delta, breathing in the salty sea breeze and conquering the southernmost point of the country is always the dream of every backpacker. A self-sufficient trip to Ca Mau by motorbike or personal car brings absolute proactivity about time and rest stops. Below is a detailed route guide and "blood-and-bone" experiences to help your trip be complete and absolutely safe.

1 Fastest Car Route from Saigon

With a distance of about 310km - 330km from HCMC to Ca Mau city, a personal car takes about 6 - 7 hours depending on traffic density. Optimal route:

HCMC → HCMC - Trung Luong Expressway → Trung Luong - My Thuan Expressway → My Thuan 2 Bridge → My Thuan - Can Tho Expressway → Highway 1A (via Nga Bay Hau Giang) → Turn into Quan Lo - Phung Hiep road → Ca Mau City.

Advantages: Quan Lo - Phung Hiep route shortens the distance by about 30km compared to the traditional Highway 1A, traffic is sparser and you are not continuously restricted by speed limits in residential areas like going through Soc Trang or Bac Lieu.

2 Motorbike Route along Highway 1A

Motorbikes are not allowed on the expressway, so you will go along the traditional route closely following Highway 1A through the provinces of Long An, Tien Giang, Vinh Long, Can Tho, Hau Giang, Soc Trang, Bac Lieu and then to Ca Mau.

  • Total driving time: 7.5 - 9 hours (including rest along the way).
  • Motorbike tips: You should depart early around 4:30 - 5:00 AM to avoid harsh sun and traffic jams at the gateway of Binh Chanh (HCMC) and Tan An (Long An).

3 Route to Drive Straight to Dat Mui Ca Mau

Previously, to go to Ca Mau Cape, tourists had to park at Nam Can boat station and take a "vo lai" canoe on the river for about 1 hour. However, since 2016, the Ho Chi Minh road section connecting Nam Can to Dat Mui has been completed.

"Currently, both cars and motorbikes can smoothly drive straight from Ca Mau city across Nam Can bridge, following the national highway straight into the parking lot of Dat Mui National Tourist Area extremely conveniently and quickly!"

4 Reputable Rest Stops on the Route
Favorable and smooth moving route

To ensure health and check the vehicle, you should stop and rest every 2 - 3 hours of driving:

Mekong Rest Stop (Tien Giang)

The most classy rest stop in the first stage, cool ecological garden space, clean food, luxurious toilets.

Phuong Trang Rest Stop (Soc Trang or Hau Giang)

Suitable for a light snack break, drinking sugarcane juice, checking tires and refueling.

5 Important Notes on Speed Traps & Traffic Laws

Extremely important: Obey the speed limit signs!

Traffic police in the Mekong Delta (especially the section through Tien Giang, Soc Trang and Bac Lieu) work extremely seriously. Mobile speed trap checkpoints operate continuously day and night. Pay attention to residential area signs (maximum speed 50-60km/h) and continuous road markings prohibiting crossing at narrow bridge sections.
